Filoti

This is the largest village of Naxos, where many young people live and work on livestock farming mainly and agriculture. The old village expands in two neighborhoods, Rachidi and Klefaro. It is worthwhile to ascend the narrow alleys and visit Agios Nikolaos, the imposing church of Panagia Filotitissa (18th century) and reach the square of Pera Perivoli with the marble monumental fountain. Here you can admire the impressive Barozzi tower, built before 1620 – not precisely established – and the coat of arms of Barozzi can be seen at the lintel of its central entrance. It later passed to the family of Fragkopoulos and Marcopoli. The most significant monument of the area is the tower of Chimarros, built on top of a small hill, between the old settlements of Argiovessa and Vardaki.

Info

- In Filioti you will find cafes, pizzarias, grill rooms, shops and services. At the most central point, “Gefyra”, there stands the tall old plane tree that has always been the meeting point of the locals.

- On the main road there is a building hosting the Collection of Hellenic Currencies of Nikolas Moustakis, with paper notes and coins of recent times that were released in Greece, Cyprus, especially in Crete and the Ionian Islands.
