AEGEAN ISLANDS

Architecture

The structured environment of Anafi is one of the most typical and untouched samples of Cycladic architecture. With poor means and limited construction capacities the residents managed to create austere buildings of high aesthetics. The regional planning and the masterful utilization of the terrain’s morphology in Chora with its white-washed houses, arched and flat-roofed, the renowned “katikies” (farmhouses) in the countryside, and the scattered country churches, constitute standards of workmanlike folk art. They are objects of systematic study and a source of artistic inspiration.
