Serifos is connected to the well-known ancient myth of Perseus and Danae. According to ancient mythographers, the sarcophagus, in which Argos’s king Acrisius had put Danae and Perseus, reached the coasts of the island and was pulled up from the sea by Dictys. He was the one who raised little Perseus. According to the myth, when Perseus came of age, he turned Polydeuces, Dictys’s brother and king of the island, to stone by showing him Medusa’s head, because he had insulted his mother, Danae. Thus, Dictys became king of Serifos and Medusa’s head was offered to Athena as a gift to adorn her shield.
