Sifnos
The founding myth connects the name of the island to Sifnos, the son of Sounios, who was an ancient hero from Attica. According to ancient writers, the Pelasgians, Carians, Phoenicians and Leleges were the first settlers of the island. Afterwards, the Minoans came to Sifnos. It is said that king Minos drove away the former residents of the island and made his sons rulers of Sifnos. The island was also known as “Merope” and “Acis” in the Antiquity.
