The countryside residence of the Jesuits
Driving on the dirt road that connects Melanes to Potamia, an imposing monument will stand in front of you as you take a turn. This ruined building was the countryside residence of the Jesuit monks. It is built in a gully next to a great spring. At the end of the 17th century it was in the centre of the area, where the property managed by the Order of the Jesuits was expanding. The monastery–residence had a tower-like architecture and many rooms luxuriously decorated. It was built by the most famous Jesuit clerics of Naxos, Roberto Soze, and operated as a school for a short time.
