First glance
Ferries traveling to Cycladic tourist destinations usually pass by Gyaros. However, this arid and treeless islet east of Kea and north of Syros is of great historical significance. It was once a place of exile, imprisonment and torture for thousands of Greek communists. Over 22,000 political prisoners were sent to this islet in the second half of the 20th century and spent their lives in military tents having to face all kinds of weather conditions or confined in prison cells.
