AEGEAN ISLANDS

Archaeological museum of Kos

The building at Eleftherias Square that houses the archaeological museum was built in 1935. Many important sculptures and mosaics that were discovered during excavations on the island are on display inside the building as well as outside in its courtyard. The enormous head of Hera in the hall of the museum welcomes the visitors. In the western room you will find statues of the Hellenistic period that were discovered in the arcades of the Odeon. The imposing statue of Hippocrates stands out in the northwestern room. In the northern room you’ll get to see statues of Demeter, Persephone and Athena dating back to the Classical period as well as statues of Aphrodite, the Nymphs and Tyche dating from the Hellenistic period. The mosaic in the courtyard depicting the arrival of Asclepius in Kos is definitely worth checking out.
