AEGEAN ISLANDS

General Information

Kastellorizo or Megisti is on the easternmost edge of Greece. It is 135 km from Rhodes and 2 nautical miles from the Turkish coasts. It took the name Megisti (Biggest or Greatest) because it is the biggest of a complex of fourteen small islands with the most famous one being that of Ro. The name Kastellorizo of western origin means “red fort”. The shipping and the fishing played an important role to the history of Kastellorizo and its economy was connected to the Asian coast of Lycia which is right across.

Its fauna is extremely interesting, as there is a big variety of amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish. The Mediterranean monk seal Monachus monachus lives here as well. The island has been included in the network NATURA 2000.
